The Prodigal Lover of Colours

The Archdiocesan Museum of Olomouc is presenting a new exhibition titled Marnotratný milovník barev (The Prodigal Lover of Colors). The visitors are able to admire the work of Stanislav Menšík (1912-1970), a painter from Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc. The exhibition presents his paintings containing Christian themes, landscapes, still life, or paintings of simple stories and fragments from life. Stanislav Menšík was a self-taught painter, who later in life went through training with Alfons Mucha, and was significantly influenced by the work of the French painter Georges Roualt.

Stanislav Menšík decided for the career of an artist at the age of nineteen after the death of his father. He did not make much money painting, so at first he was materially supported by his sister. "The first painting was sold to his friend for five hundred crowns. It is said he had given the money to a beggar, a romantic gesture that was quite characteristic of him. He was never financially set. His first commercial success was brought by an independent exhibition in Brno in 1944, where all his exhibited paintings were sold," says Jan Andres Sr., author of the exhibition.

The exhibition is open until January 27, 2019.
