Lipensko

The synagogue in Lipník was built in the 16th century and is the oldest in Moravia and the second oldest in the whole of the Czech Republic (after the Old New Synagogue in Prague).

The main hall was adapted in the Jagiellon Gothic style with arches. Later building conversions corrupted the original architectural purity and pragmatic nature of the building. Today it serves as a place of worship for the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. The present-day interior features larger than life-size reliefs of Moses, Jesus and John Hus, the work of Mr. Navrátil, a sculptor from the nearby village of Velký Újezd.

There are two Jewish cemeteries in Lipník - the old one and the new one. The old cemetery served as a burying ground for more than 300 years. When it was filled up with graves, totalling more than 1,500 tombstones, the Jewish community bought a piece of land in its vicinity and a new cemetery was established there in 1883. The new Jewish cemetery looks like a small park. A place of honour at the old cemetery is taken by the tombstone of B. T. Fränkel, a famous Lipník rabbi, philosopher and scientist. The Jewish cemetery is accessible only as part of a free guided tour.
